Grocery Gripes

Purpose
Students will learn about the cost of groceries in different parts of the United States and develop skills in working with money and finding averages.

Coordinator
Nelda Baker is a special education teacher in Socorro, NM. This project is a class requirement for my graduate studies in Curriculum, Technology, and Educational Reform, an on-line Master's program at the University of Illinois in Champaign-Urbana. This is a 4 week class which doesn't allow very much time to announce and complete the project.

Activity For Individuals
This activity involves taking a list of groceries to your local grocery store and finding out the prices and weights of those items listed on the worksheet. When I receive your registration, I will send an e-mail with the list of groceries to price. Please return the completed form to me via e-mail at bakers@gilanet.com
I am asking that you check regular prices, not sale prices.

Activity for Groups
 If a group of students is working on this project, have each student collect the prices, bring them to class, and find the average price for each item. Then the class can send in one worksheet with the average prices for the class.

Feedback:
The results of this project will be posted on a web page showing the average prices for the groceries, by state.
