The vision I have of college/university education in year 2020 is not that much different than today. While technology may advance greatly in the next 22 years, will the actual usage be academic? The number of universities that have technology and are connected is obviously going to increase. The possibilities are great, I agree, but I am doubtful concerning the truly educational application of technology into the learning system.

Currently programs are already being implemented that provide cooperative learning situations. As a part of another technology class, I communicate and tutor high school composition students using a software entitled FirstClass. This is helpful to both sets of "students."

A student working cooperatively with another student across the world is even more impressive; and may draw more students to that particular university. The real question would be: was the cooperative learning created to use the technology? or was the cooperative learning done before (maybe less frequently) and technology is making it more efficient? Enhancing and aiding the learning process creates a more effective learning situation; however, replacing for the sake of using technology just changes the cover of the book.

I think it is crucial that technology not replace the hands-on, observational work that is part of the education field today. Technology could replace the need for education students to actually travel to classrooms or for archeology students to spend a semester on a dig site, but would that aid their learning? In addition, it is important that technology not replace the educator. Computers are only as smart as they are programmed; they cannot deviate from the lesson if there is a fire drill.

While I love to use computers and am even beginning to develop ideas for programming my own applications, I don't feel that computers/technology will change my teaching environment. Technology allows me to create and develop activities more quickly but it won't replace my 30 minute, twice a week music class.

I can only hope that as technology does change and advance that the education institutions will use caution and wisdom in their application of it.
