The majority of teachers and administrators in Springfield School District #186, Springfield, Illinois, use Macintosh computers. There are approximately 2500 Macintoshes, 600 Apple IIes and AppleII/GS's and 300 IBM computers in the district. According to District Technology Director, Michael Holinga, the district has approximately one computer for every seven students. The lower end machines are used for drill and practice, while the IBM's are used in high school business courses. The Macintosh computers include LCIIs, LCIIIs, LC575s, LC630s, Power Macs--5260s, 5500s, 6100s and the newest purchases, Macintosh G3s. Many schools have Laptop computers available for teachers to use.
Peripherals available in most schools include QuickCams (both black and white and color), FlexCams, Laser Disk Players, Video Cameras. Peripherals available for checkout from the District Computer Services include: Projection Devices, Still Shot Cameras, QuickTake Cameras, Laser Disk Players, E-Mates, Laptop Computers, and Zip Drives. Schools may also purchase disks and printer ink cartridges from them. The Preview Room at Lincoln School is an area set aside for teachers to see and use the latest available technology. Also available in the Preview Room for district use is a Scanner, a PaperPort, an Easy Photo Reader, and a Projection System to preview presentations.
The Springfield Public School District #186 lends various technology for use by district teachers through the IRC (Instructional Resource Center). There are 4907 total titles available at the IRC. This total is broken down into 511 CD's, 98 laser discs, 3127 videos, and 180 pieces of software. Materials information is organized and distributed by Jan Grant.
The K-12 CD is available to all teachers in the Springfield School District. This CD contains all software and utilities that the district is currently site licensed to use. This CD is updated yearly as new technology and resources become available to the school district.

In addition to the district resources available in District #186, each school has their own technology resources within the buildings. At Lincoln, these resources are housed within the school's library and are available for teachers to check out for use within the classrooms.
A library database provides a complete listing of software titles. There are approximately 15 laser discs available at Lincoln, in addition to the four that accompany the fifth and sixth grade FOSS science modules. The data base also lists ten software titles available on discs. Finally, teachers have a wide variety of CD-ROM programs available at Lincoln School. Approximately 115 CD-ROM titles are included in the library's data base.
