CD-ROM Titles:

1. Eyewitness Encyclopedia of Science 2.0, Dorling Kinserly(DK)

Grade Levels: Ages 10 and up

Description: This CD allows students to explore the areas of Math, Physics, Chemistry, Life Sciences, Earth and the Universe.

Uses in My Classroom: I use this CD each quarter as a part of science research stations. Students research landforms, levers, pulleys, simple machines, mixtures and solutions, scientists, and models and designs.

2. The Way Things Work 2.0, David Macaulay, Dorling Kinserly(DK)

Grade Levels: Ages 8 and up

Description: Explore hundreds of machines and the scientific principles behind each one. Learn about inventors and their inventions.

Uses in My Classroom: I use this CD during my Levers and Pulleys unit as a research station. Students research various simple machines.

3. InventorLabs: Technology

Grade Levels: Grades 5-12

Description: This CD focuses on three inventors: Thomas Edison, Alexander Graham Bell, and James Watt. Students explore their labs and their inventions to learn scientific principles. A timeline is also included, which nicely incorporates social studies and history.

Uses in My Classroom: I plan to use this CD in science and language arts during our fourth quarter theme, "Imagination at work." During this unit we learn about inventors and inventions, and our science module focuses on Models and Designs.

1. Scientists and Mathematicians

Description: Biographical information and photographs of famous scientists and mathematicians

Uses in My Classroom: I use this site during our Renaissance unit. Students research an assigned scientist within various stations.

 

2. Angel Island Extension Activities

Description: This site gives background for Angel Island. It also provides extension activities, bibliographies, and other related materials.

Uses in My Classroom: In sixth grade, students are part of a novel group in which students read the novel Dragonwings. This novel is part of our Immigration theme. We use this site to support this novel.

 

3. The Inventors Archive

Description: Students can search by inventors or inventions alphabetically.

Uses in My Classroom: We use this site during our Inventions theme. Students research chosen inventors in a series of stations.
