Our district has developed an acceptable use policy for use of the Internet in our schools. This plan is incorporated into the District's discipline policy, as well as the individual schools' code of conduct.
An important issue stipulated in the policy is that Internet use is restricted to use with instructional programs only. Following are the main items included in the plan. It states that users shall not:
Place copyrighted materials without author's approval, or access and use materials that violate law or Board policy.Use for commercial benefit.
Submit, publish, or display defamatory, inaccurate, abusive, obscene, threatening, or illegal information.
Commit vandalism in any system.
The District is updating their plan in the fall of 1998 to address the issue of placing students' photographs on the Internet. At Lincoln School, we handle this by requiring parent approval prior to using photographs.
Consequences for improper use are stipulated in the District's discipline policy. Our school also has general guidelines which we use if an infraction occurs:
First offense: Student is prohibited from use for one week.Second offense: Student is prohibited from use for one month.
Third offense: Student may be prohibited from use for the remainder of the year.
