Internet Stations

The sites that students will access during the two Internet stations will include the following (Others may be added as located.):

  • Inventor's Toolbox: The Elements of Machines
    http://www.mos.org/sln/Leonardo/InventorsToolbox.html
This site describes a variety of simple machines, such as the wheel and axle, pulleys, wedge, screw, lever, and gear. A picture is provided, as well as a brief description of how each machine makes work easier. Students will use this site as a resource to learn how simple machines provide an advantage.
  • Bill Nye the Science Guy: Simple Machines
    http://www.fi.edu/qa97/spotlight3/spotlight3.html
Advantage is described on this page, and a few simple machines are described. Activities are also provided to illustrate the way simple machines make work easier. This will also be used as an additional resource for students.
  • Simple Machines Unit
    http://viking.stark.k12.oh.us/~orchard/simpmach.htm
This site will be utilized as a teacher resource page. It provides links to simple machine-related sites, as well as lesson plans and activities.

Ideas that Changed the World
CD-Rom Station

This CD-Rom is a wonderful resource for students to learn how simple machines were used in ancient times to make work easier. Illustrations of the machines, as well as descriptions, are provided to demonstrate how these machines provided an advantage. This information will help students as they compare and contrast the ancient and modern tools for the venn diagram activity.

Reference Books

Various reference books will be utilized by students to complete their research. These will include encyclopedias, as well as many other books related to this theme.

Pizza to Go

Pizza to Go is a MECC program for the Apple IIGS. Student change certain variables related to simple machines, such as a wheel or pulley, in order to meet the goal--getting past the pests to deliver pizzas! The program further illustrates for students how simple machines provide an advantage.

Reference CD-Rom Station

Students will utilize a variety of general reference CD-Roms for their research. This may include the following titles:

  • Encyclopedia of Science
  • The Way Things Work
  • Tools and Gadgets
  • Grolier's Encyclopedia
  • Bookshelf
  • Encarta

"Ketchup" Day

The final day of stations will be used by students as a day to catch up ("Ketchup") on any missed or unfinished stations. Students may also revisit an especially helpful station to complete their research. If this time is not needed by the student, they will begin the final project.
