ESL/EFL

  • 1993-1997, 1999, 2000, 2002 Instructor of English as a Second Language (TA) at the university level for the Intensive English Institute (IEI), the non-university ESL arm of the Division of English as an International Language (DEIL) at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Taught English Structure (Grammar) in the Fall '93, Spring '96, and Fall '96 semesters and Reading in the Spring '97 semester. For the latter course, I designed a class Web page that contained assignments, links to on-line readings, etc. Taught Current Events for ESL students Fall '99, Spring 2000, and Fall 2002. In addition, I taught for a special one-month summer ESL program in 1994 for Japanese students from Kinki University, Osaka, involving field trips to local points of interest in the Illinois-Missouri area.

  • 1996, 1997, 1999, 2000 Instructor of English as a Second Language in the Intensive English Program at Parkland College, the community college of Champaign County, during Summer semesters 1996 and 1999.   • 1994 Instructor of Writing (TA) for the ESL Service Courses program in the Division of English as an International Language (DEIL) at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. I taught academic English writing to high English proficiency international graduate students enrolled at the university for one semester, Fall 1994.  Writing genres including term papers, reports, and abstracts .

Culture in Second Language
  • 2001 Instructor, TFL 114:  Teaching English through American Cultural Media Designed and taught  a course on cultural issues in the Foreign Language  classroom and how to incorporate US culture into the TEFL curriculum to teacher trainees in a 1-year TEFL certificate program at Parkland College during Fall 2001.

Modern Standard Arabic

  • 1983-84 Instructor, Modern Standard Arabic, at the (then) MRM/Language Research Center.  Taught a small class of US government employees to read and write standard newspaper Arabic from July to December 1983.  Secondly,  researched a guide to Arabic prepositions to have been published by the MRM publishing arm Dunwoody Press, but the manuscript, although complete was never published due to budget limitations on the project.  January to December 1984.
