Technology Resources
by Jim Peterson
Human Resources
The greatest technology resources in the district are within the staff who have taken the initiative to push technology forward in their respective buildings and the district plan. UMS and UHS hire full time technology integrationists. The board approved a stipend for each of the elementaries and Washington Early Childhood for a Technology Cadre.

Wide Area Network Resources
The Urbana School District has built a wide area network in collaboration with the Champaign School District and the University of Illinois. This includes Internet connectivity to 6 elementaries, UMS, UHS, Adult Education and the central office via ISDN connection. Washington Early Childhood and Cunningham Children's Home are connected via several dialup connections. The districts share web and email servers that are maintained by CCSO of UIUC.
Local Area Network Resources
Local area networks exist in each of the 6 elementaries, UMS, UHS, Adult Education and the central office. These include at least one ethernet drop in each of the classrooms and offices. Libraries and computer labs have multiple drops depending upon the number of workstations.
All of the buildings except Thomas Paine elementary have a network file and (limited) application server that manage student and staff accounts. The library automation software from Follett's is on each of these servers. Several of the servers are also used for student data management.
Computer Resources
A recent inventory of networked computer equipment included the following machines. We do not track any computers below Mac LCII's and 486 clients.

Buildings may elect to purchase their own software for specific curricular needs. The Urbana School District Technology Committee has purchased a number of district licences for software including the following:
Claris Works 5.0 - an integrated word processing, database, drawing and spreadsheet package.
Claris Homepage - creating web pages
Foolproof version 3.0 - securing hard drives and desktops
Through the Microsoft Partnership, we have been able to provide training on a number of software titles including:
Microsoft Office 97 Pro - including Word for word processing, Excel for spreadsheets, Access for databases and Powerpoint for presentations.
Microsoft Office 98 - including Word for word processing, Excel for spreadsheets and Powerpoint for presentations.
Microsoft Publisher - package that assists in the development of flyers, newsletters, etc.

We have also amassed a large number of individual titles which are available through checkout from the central office teacher's center. Most of these are currently floating throughout the district:
