Personal Interests
Why are you interested in
this course?
I love the notion
of stone-cold righteous geekdom. I also feel strongly that learning
with technology is vital to the times we live in. I'm very interested
in how we learn with technology and how some traditional methods might
promote better learning than newer technologies, and visa versa.
|
What do you hope to learn?
I want to know EVERYTHING.
But I will settle for some opportunities to try out some technologies
like Flash and other advanced web capabilities while creating a useful
educational website.
|
How would you like to make
use of the work you do for this course?
Not sure about this
one, but I'd like to tie my efforts and insights to the classes and
kids I teach.

Troubleshooting
What kinds of technical troubleshooting
are you called upon to do in your job?
You name it, I've
probably done! I've done hands on at the machine and LAN level on
both major operating systems. My main interest now is in networking.
|
Do you need to keep individual
computers or networks up and running in a classroom, a lab, a school, or
a district?
No, I need money to
replace these #@!* 133 MHz pieces of #&*% -- Seriously, I and
others know what the problems are, we just need $$$$ to fix them..
|
What, if anything, do you
wish you knew how to do better in the area of troubleshooting?
Novell and Windows
2K, I find intriguing. Novell because they do it all "bass-ackwrds"
so to speak from other networking schemes. Windows 2000 is daunting
because it is really so powerful. Just a lot to get a hold of.
|
How do you think Ed Psy 490-I
could help you learn about those things?
Not sure about this
one -- probably just commiserating with me will be fine..

Streaming Media
Do you have access to a video
camera? If so, is it digital (MiniDV, Digital8), analog (VHS, Hi8),
or web cam (computer peripheral, no tape used)? Have you ever used it to
record audio/video?
Well, sort of -- if
I whine to a friend he might let me borrow his. I believe it is Digital
8. I despise web cams. .
|
Have you ever produced streaming
video before?
If so, what format? (e.g. RealVideo, QuickTime, Windows Media,
Streaming PowerPoint, etc.)
What software did you use to encode/edit the video? (e.g.
RealProducer, QuickTime Pro, etc.)
Have you ever copied or captured
video from a camcorder, VCR or other external video source to a computer?
Have you ever created a screen
movie (captured events and images on the computer screen and converted
to video format)?
If so, did you include an audio track with the movie (e.g.
narration, music, etc.)
What software did you use? (e.g. SnagIt, Windows Media
Encoder, etc.)
Do you already have a video
that you would like to stream on the Internet?
If so, is it on tape, or on the computer?
If not, would you prefer to have a video (raw material)
provided for you to work with,
or would you make your own with a video camera?
Is this an area you would
like to learn more about? If so, how do you think it might be useful for
you?
Would you like to make use
of these kinds of technologies in your 490-I course project? If so, how?
Video is extremely
time consuming for the amount of information it conveys in my opinion.

Advanced
Client-Side Browser Functionality
Do you have any experience
with writing computer code for any add-on technologies which work together
with web browsers? Some examples would be coding JavaScript and/or
DHTML within web pages, incorporating scriptable plug-ins such as HyperStudio
or Macromedia's Director, Authorware or Flash programs, and writing or
deploying browser applets in the Java programming language. These
kinds of technologies are generally used to create eye-catching displays
on browsers - e.g. math and science activities involving drawing or dragging
screen elements, or flashy animated menus.
Yes, I am very interested.
I have bookmarked many flash, DHTML and Java sites. I own a copy of
Flash, Director, Dreamweaver, Fireworks. I am a big fan of Macromedia
products..
|
Is this an area you would
like to learn more about? If so, how do you think it might be useful for
you?
Well, web pages with
a little discreet use of Flash, DHTML, or java script just look better.
Beyond that they can give pages much more functionality. Many educational
sites deploy flash graphics
|
Would you like to make use
of these kinds of technologies in your 490-I course project? If so, how?
Well, I'd like to
try some of the above mentioned. I'm not even sure of what my project
is going to be, but this is the area that I'd most like to concentrate
on and learn about. I've made some small steps on my own, but again,
time is a limiting factor. I am familiar with a lot of the features,
but alas have not implemented many.

Server-Side Scripting
Do you have any experience
with writing computer code for any add-on technologies which work together
with web servers? Some examples would be coding for database-browser interaction
(possibly using Active Server Pages scripting, ColdFusion, or Filemaker's
CDML),or writing or running custom CGI scripts written in Perl or another
scripting language. These kinds of technologies are generally used
to facilitate collaboration among users - e.g. via interfaces familiar
to CTER users like WebBoards, Blackboard/CourseInfo, our C-Base, interactive
papers, etc.
No, I don't. Its not
that it is not interesting but I have pursued other areas and there
is only so much time. I find this area interesting, but I'd rather
concentrate on more accessible client side features.
|
Is this an area you would
like to learn more about? If so, how do you think it might be useful for
you?
Yes, I think that
I would like to learn more. I don't have a strong background in programming,
but I think that web data base applications are extremely useful.
|
Would you like to make use
of these kinds of technologies in your 490-I course project? If so, how?
I think that I would
like to learn enough to make an informed decision. I don't know how
much of this I can realistically absorb and put to use in a month,
but I would like a starting point to grow in this area.

Do you have a Windows machine
or Macintosh?
I was a MAC user
for many years before succumbing to the dark side. Mainly I switched
over because NOBODY in the world of Networking uses MACS. Secondly,
I just got tired of not having the software options available to
windows users. I currently have three PC's operating on a home network
with cable modem.
|
What's the version number
of
the operating system? (e.g. Win98, MacOS 8)
I run two machines, a 650 MHz laptop
and a 400 MHz desktop with Windows ME. I have a one gighz desktop
(which I ordered by components on the internet and built myself
(saved beucoup bucks) on which I run Windows 2000 Pro.
|
Processor speed? (e.g. 500
MHz or G3)
650 MHz, 400 MHz,
and 1000 MHz; networked with a Linksys Router/switch which serves
as a firewall for home network, and, distributes my cable modem
WAN connection to the internetwork. It rocks!
|
Amount of free space on hard
disk? (GB or MB)
I have two 13.5
gig drives on the 650 MHz laptop and 400 MHz. I have a 30 gig drive
on the 1 gig MHz machine and another 20 gig portable device. With
my firewalled network I can share files between the drives effectively
giving me 77 gigs of storage space.
|
What type of Internet connection?
(e.g. cable modem, DSL, dialup 56K, etc.)
Cable Modem. I also
have dial up modem access on laptop when I travel. (Which I don't
do much because I spend all my money on computers and software!)
|
What software do you usually
use to transfer files to and from a server?
(e.g. WS_FTP, Fetch, uploading feature of a web editor such
as Front Page, etc.)
What other ways do you know to upload files to a server?
I use Cute FTP,
the latest version. I also use Dreamweaver bulit in FTP feature
as its works well with its powerful site mapping and organization
features.
