Virtual Field Trip to the Zoo

by Quaehee Yu / EdPsy387 Spring 1999

Introduction

Travel for education is not a new concept.  Many of the world’s learned citizens have recognized and endorsed travel as a mean of education.  Travel is a chance to explore a chosen site firsthand, to experience an unfamiliar environment through interaction without pressure of formal homework or test requirements.  Travel involves an experience in which there is organized learning.

Actual field trip experience of "wildlife-viewing" can inspire children’s concern for natural environment and living creatures.  If it is not possible to go to the real zoo, it becomes available through virtual tour on the web.

Issue about education and technique

(1) Does virtual field trip to the zoo affect on the children’s knowledge acquisition about living creatures?

(2) What techniques will be helpful for children to learn about animals on the web site?

Learners

Learners will be the children.   The range of their ages will be varied, because it depends on how educators or guides use the web site.   For lower grade level, they can show the photos and videos of animals and give short description.   However, for higher grade level, they can give more detail explanation and show how to go other links.
