Schollar [Shollar], Liudmila, b. St Petersburg, 1888. Russian dancer and teacher. Graduated from Imperial School into Maryinsky Ballet 1906. Danced in Diaghilev's first Paris season (1909), and until 1914 divided her time between his co. and the Maryinsky. Served as a nurse during World War I, returned to Maryinsky 1917-21, then rejoined Diaghilev. Taught in New York 1953-63, Washington 1963-5, and then in San Francisco.


Sokolova, Lydia [Hilda Munnings], b. Wanstead, Essex, 1896; d. Sevenoaks, 1974. English dancer. Studied with A. Pavlova and Mordkin; joined Diaghilev co. 1913, his first English dancer. Remained with Diaghliev's Ballets Russes until the end, dancing principal roles. After 1919, worked in musicals in London and taught for the Royal Academy of Dancing.


Spesivtseva [Spsivtseva], Olga, b. Rostov, 1895. Russian dancer. She studied in the Imperial Theatre School and danced in the Maryinsky Ballet. She graduated in 1913. First danced Aurora 4 Oct 1915. Ballerina 1918. Toured USA with Diaghilev's co. 1916, replacing Karsavina and dancing with Nijinsky. Returned to Russia in 1917. In 1921 danced Aurora in Daighilev's The Sleeping Princess in London, returned to Russia 1922, but departed in the spring of 1924. In 1927 she created teh title role in Balanchine's La Chatte (mus. Sauguet) with the Daighilev's Ballets Russes. She moved to the USA in 1939 and in 1943 suffered a complete nervous breakdown and was placed in a hospital for mental diseases. In Feb 1963 with the help of friends, she was discharged and settled in the Tolstoy Farm, Rockland County, NY.

Tchernicheva, Liubov', b. St Petersburg, 1890; d. London, 1976. Russian dancer and ballet mistress. Studied Imperial School, St Petersburg, graduating 1908. She married Grigoriev 1909 and in 1911 joined Daighilev co., resigning from Imperial Theatre in 1912; a leading dancer with Daighilev until 1929, ballet mistress to the co. from 1926. In 1932 joined Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo and stayed with de Basil until the end. Subsequently, with her husband, restaged much of teh Diaghilev repertory.


Trefilova, Vera, b. Vladikavkaz, 1875; d. Paris, 1943. Russian dancer. Daughter of a dramatic actress. Studied at the St Petersburg Theater School; graduated into coprs de ballet 1894. Studied under Cecchetti, Catalina Beretta, e. Sokolova, and Legat. Reached the position of prima ballerina 1906 but danced her first Aurora 1904. In 1921 Daighilev persuaded her to dance in The Sleeping Princess, though she had her farewell benefit in Swan Lake, 24 Jan 1910. Taught in Paris until the end of her life.
