This is a sample timeline in which the students will be creating. The information for their timeline will be gathered during rotations in science, social studies, math, and language arts. At the end of the study, the students will then add information to a timeline to be posted on the school's website. The timeline will include connections to pages they have created containing information about the simple machine or artifact they have built. Directions for the activity are below.

Preparing your Timeline

  • Create your timeline with Tom Snyder TimeLiner 4.0.
  • In TimeLiner, choose the Compact view from the View menu.
  • Format the events so they are easy to read. You can highlight events you want to connect to the Internet with a distinctive color or font.
  • From the Edit menu, choose Copy Entire Image. A copy of the current view of your timeline is now in the computer's clipboard.
  • If you don't want the entire page copied, you can capture a picture using screen shot or Flash-It. (For this timeline, I used screen shot). If you use this method skip the Copy Entire Image step.

Adding a time line to Your Web Page

  • Create a new Web page in a Web design program. ( For this page, Claris HomePage was used, it can be done using a Windows software also).
  • From the Edit menu, paste the timeline you copied. Your timeline will be placed in the Web page as a GIF image. If you used Screen Shot or Flash-It, you will insert your timeline as a graphic.
  • Use the Image Map feature in your web design program to link the events in your timeline to the sites you researched. Follow the following steps:
    • Double click on the timeline image you just pasted in your Web page.
    • The Image Editor appears. You will need to click on Behavior, and click Edit.
    • Click on the Rectangular Link Tool and draw a rectangle over the event for which you want to create a link.
    • Open the Link Editor and enter the URL of the site. This can be another site you have created or it can be an external site you have researched.
    • Repeat the process for each event you want to link.
    • Save your changes and close the Image Map window.
