Web Page Design & HTML Authoring Tutorials~

Graphics By Dezign- On this site you will find an ever growing offering of original high quality web graphics for use in web page development and design. They had exceptional holiday templates that would be loved by elementary age children. The templates included a large selection of clip art that would work well on the particular page. The How To section of this site gave some basic information that would be helpful for novice web page makers.
HTML Wizards- This page has numerous tutorials on HTML authoring. While I found a significant amount of the information to be too technical for my purposes, I did enjoy the Webmastering section. It discusses what it takes to create a successful web site. This site would be good for students who have an interest in how web pages are programmed.
Big Nose Bird- There are over 300 pages of tutorials, reference materials, and other free resources located on this site. Of particular interest is the section on creating HTML forms, a skill I had wanted to learn for a long time. This site is recommended for novice to intermediate web masters.

Other Tutorials & Resources~

WebQuest- This site is designed to serve as a resource to those who are using the WebQuest model. It provides excellent examples broken down by grade level and category.  WebQuests are designed to use learners' time well, to focus on using information rather than looking for it, and to support learners' thinking at the levels of analysis, synthesis and evaluation. (Information from the WebQuest Site)

Fun Brain- This is a phenomenal site for K-8 educators and the families they serve. This site allows the teacher to give on-line quizzes in a variety of subjects. The quizzes may be picked from a list or created by the teacher. The results are emailed to the teacher. This site also has practice for the students who are preparing for a particular quiz. In addition, a class calendar is easy to set up and maintain. There is also a section of games for kids which reinforce skills learned in class.

The CyberBee- This informative site is ideal for K-8 teachers. It provides numerous resources on where to get information to answer questions specific to the elementary classroom. This site also has a section to help kids with research. The site has many links to on-line projects which are all excellent.

MultiMedia Schools- This is a practical how-to magazine that addresses multiple technologies used in K-12 schools today—CD-ROM, multimedia, online, and Internet resources.

Local Resources:

Support for the district software is great in Springfield District 186. The Project LINCOL'N (Living In Our New Computer Oriented eNvironment) model of instruction is a 15 day course that focuses on integrating technology into the classroom. During this training, participants are able to practice the following applications:

Presentation Software~
    Kid Pix Slide Show
    Claris Works Slide Show
    Power Point
    Hyperstudio
    Claris Home Page

Multi-Media~
    Quick Cam
    Flex Cam
    Explore AV Mac capabilities
    Paper Port (Scanner)
    Flash-It
    Digital Camera (Sony Mavica)
    Clip Art
    Quick Time VR

Project LINCOL'N also covers most of the computer basics (i.e., e-mail, spreadsheets, databases, etc.) This training is open to all teachers in District 186. In addition to the 15 day summer class, follow-up staff development and 'just-in-time' technology training occur throughout the school year. In order to entice participants, educators are offered a variety of compensation options for their participation in the professional development training session.

In addition to Project LINCOL'N, the district offers after school classes throughout the school year. To get a complete listing of the classes being offered, check out the Tech Connection Newsletter, which is published the first Wednesday of the month.

Problem Solving:
Even with all of the training provided by the district, sometimes you just need more information about a certain program. The internet is a great way to get up to the minute information and help for virtually any program. Below are the programs that I would like to use with my students.

Hyperstudio Tutorial- This web site is a great reference for people just starting out with Hyperstudio. It is a good place to go for the basics, as well as some advanced applications.

iMovie- Our school has several iMac's that have the iMovie capability. I had a 30 minute class on the topic, but I really didn't pay very close attention. It is for that reason that I sought out an on-line tutorial to bring me up to speed.

KidPix- This tutorial is a great refresher on how to use Kid Pix in the classroom. It helps educators learn what they need to teach their students to ensure they are successful.

Sony Digital Mavica- This site is in a question and answer format and is very helpful. It will help educators create a knowledge base about the camera. All of the questions I wanted to find answers to where available at this site.

Web Page Design- For my students I have selected a tutorial to help them get started in making their own web page.

Web Monkey for Kids- This page is made for the child that wants to learn how to make their own web page. They have divided the site into several sections which make it easy to navigate.

In addition, I have created handouts for student use when using Netscape Composer and the Sony Digital Mavica.
