Standards, Benchmarks and Body of Knowledge

In Springfield, over 350 teachers have written grade specific standards and benchmarks for kindergarten through eighth grade and course specific standards and benchmarks for high school. This work is based both on state and national standards. We believe that we can create a curriculum through our standards and benchmarks that will be uniform in nature and create the same high expectations for student learning across the system. For each benchmark a body of knowledge has been developed which communicates the essential knowledge that students must know or be able to do at a specific grade level. The body of knowledge illustrates the progressive development of what students need to learn across a series of grades.

The standards, benchmarks and body of knowledge will be used to guide the selection of  instructional materials.

The standards and benchmarks can be viewed at the Springfield Public Schools web site. The body of knowledge is an internal document that is currently available only to educators in the Springfield schools.
