The following
is a list of volunteer opportunities currently available in our classroom.
If you would like to do one or more of these positions, please contact
me either by calling the school office (525-3226), sending a note with
your child, or e-mailing Mrs.Barnett.
This list provides information on both programs and specific volunteer
responsibilities so that you may choose the opportunity that best suits
your interests and skills. A short narrative describes each program and
the opportunities it offers for volunteer participation.
Bulletin
Board Creator
Description:
The Bulletin Board Creator maintains curriculum related themes on a specific
bulletin board in the classroom.
Purpose: A print rich environment is crucial to a child's developing understandings about literacy. Theme related bulletin boards allow for focused displays of print.
Comments: Ideal for someone who is creative and artistic.
Required availability
and accessibility: Flexible; able to work in school; not necessarily
an ongoing commitment.
Project
Assistant
Description:
A Project Assistant assists the teacher or parent when the class is working
on a large-scale activity that may be too difficult or time-consuming for
one adult to manage, or when the child has a project to complete at home
and needs assistance.
Purpose: A Project Assistant can become directly involved in a new experience with a child, filling in gaps that are necessary to complete the project and guiding the child toward new discoveries.
Comments: Ideal for someone who wants to make a short-term or one-time, rather than an ongoing commitment.
Required availability and accessibility: On an as-needed basis.
Copy
Helper
Description:
The school volunteer assists teachers by making photocopies, transparencies,
and laminating items.
Purpose: The purpose of this position is to free up teachers' time so that they may concentrate on academics with the children. Its purpose is to help assure that that each child receives the best possible school experience.
Comments: The school will work with your skills to give you an optimal position.
Required availability
and accessibility: I can adjust this to your schedule.
Science
Kit Inventory
Description:
This person is responsible for taking an inventory of the science kits
after they have been used. They will fill out a form to re-order materials
that need to be replenished.
Purpose:
Comments: Ideal for someone who wants to make a short-term or one-time, rather than an ongoing commitment.
Required availability
and accessibility: On an as-needed basis. This job will take approximately
two hours for each kit.
Room
Parent Representative
Description: The
Room Parent Representative helps organize class events, such as parties,
field trips, and fun fest.
Purpose: The purpose of this job is to free up teachers' time so they can concentrate on academics while still providing fun events for the children.
Comments: This job is ideal for someone who is good at organizing volunteers.
Required availability
and accessibility: On an as-needed basis.
Photographer
Description:
The Photographer takes pictures of children, class events, and community
scenes for the children to use as a basis for creating literature.
Purpose: As children begin to make meaningful connections between pictures and words, pictures can be used to reinforce the relationship. Children can dictate (and as they progress, write), stories and make books using cut-out pictures for illustrations.
Comments: Photography experience helpful, but formal training is not necessary.
Required availability
and accessibility: Able to work in the school and in the
community at large; time requirement is usually flexible; not necessarily
an ongoing commitment.
Brown Bag Book Club Discussion Leader
Description: This person is responsible for choosing the book to be read at a Brown Bag Book Club meeting. They also lead the discussion.
Purpose: The intent of the Brown Bag Book Club is to promote literacy and family involvement in the class. Students and parents are asked, not required, to read a book and then discuss it during lunch on a given day.
Comments: This is a great opportunity to work with students and parents.
Required availability:
This is done once a month at lunch time.
Craft
Afternoon Leader
Description:
This person will come up with one craft to do with the class on a Friday.
We will have "Craft Afternoons" at least once per quarter if not more.
Purpose: It is important for students to be creative. By creating a project, it is my hope that it will stimulate their creative thinking.
Comments: Ideal for someone who is creative and artistic.
Required availability:
One time commitment is all that is necessary.
