The science curriculum in Springfield District 186 consists of the FOSS (Full Option Science System) modules. Each grade level is assigned four modules to cover over the course of a year. These modules are hands-on in nature and consists of four activities, each with two or three smaller parts. While the activities are excellent, there simply isn't enough material in the four modules to cover a full year of science. I have chosen to supplement the modules and add an extra to fill the year.Alignment with Standards-
The activities in the FOSS modules and the supplemental activities are closely aligned to the Springfield School District Standards, especially in science. In addition, the students use many of their language arts and math skills to complete the units. The subjects are combined to make a meaningful learning experience. Our district does not have standards for technology, but technology is a key component in all of the units.Volunteer Connections-
There will be many opportunities for family and community volunteers to help with this newly revised curriculum. I will send home volunteer newsletters each month as well as having a web page devoted to volunteer opportunities.Change in Teaching Practices-
As a result of the newly expanded and created units, I will be able to teach science each day. Because there will be a lot of group work, I have decided to group students for each unit. In the past, I have grouped them with each activity which robbed the students of the ability to build a team. Within the groups, there will be roles that rotate with each activity. During a majority of the time spent in science this year, I will be a facilitator and guide rather than a dispenser of information.Technology-
Technology is a key component in all of the six units. The students will be using CD-ROM's, laser discs, spreadsheets, word processing, communication software, and a digital camera. In addition, they will be completing several web quests and making their own web page. The CD-ROM's, laser discs, and videos are all available to Springfield District 186 teachers by contacting the IRC. To order titles you may call 525-3034, drop by , or e-mail Pat Veseling. The numbers for each item are listed under the tasks/calendar for each unit.
