Investigating Seeds
Materials:
-
toothpicks
-
different varieties of seeds (beans,
peas, wheat) that have been soaked overnight
-
magnifying glass
Procedure:
-
Use the toothpicks to take apart
the seeds.
-
First, peel of the skin. This is
called the testa.
-
Inside the testa is a large area
known as the 'seed leaves,' or cotyledons. This is the food supply for
the young plant that will grow from the seed.
-
Now use the magnifying glass and
look for the young plant. You should find a tiny pair of leaves. You might
also see the part that will become the root and stem of the future plant.
