This activity explores the reasonable accommodations that can be provided for person's with disabilities. After running my home page (index.html) through the Bobby program I found the biggest accessibility problems were with the images. The images contained in my page could not be viewed by person's using LYNX or slower modems. This hampered the quality of information. In order to modify and therefore make my page more accessible I needed to insert image descriptions into the HTML language.

I corrected the image files by adding { ALT="Image-----}. After I added this to all the image listings I then checked my pages using Bobby 2.0. These corrections resulted in a rating of 4 stars or a Bobby approved web site. (It was necessary to check and modify all the pages in my ePortfolio that contained any type of images.) The Bobby approved image also needed to be modified in HTML language. Other modifications that could be made are: authors could use HTML structural markup to convey meaning and style sheets to format and layout pages, enable keyboard-only navigation (access to links, form fields, navigation within and between pages) and provide alternative ways to access information presented via images, sounds, applets, and scripts.

There are a few freeware/shareware programs that I use at Pleasant Hill. These can be found at: Apple's Disability Connection - Disability Shareware

  • Biggy Cursor - Enlarges the cursor to size you choose. Very helpful for younger students.
  • Color Arrow - This file goes into the System Folder and changes the arrow to rainbow colors. Also great for younger students. (older ones too!)
  • Fat Cursor - Works like Biggy Cursor. Power Book users find this especially helpful.
  • Zoom Lens - This application magnifies the portion of the screen under the mouse cursor. Excellent for the visually impaired student.
