 What is an operating system?
-It is a term that includes the monitor, computer, mouse, disk drive, and the printer.

1. Typing and Printing
• Writing a Document: Open Microsoft Word by double clicking on the icon.  Start typing.  To pick out a font you want, go to the box on the second bar that says Times New Roman.  Select the arrow, and you will see a list of possible fonts.  To capitalize, hold down shift and press the letter you want capitalized.  To bold a word/sentence, highlight (as shown below) the part you want bolded, and next to the size font box, click on B.

• Printing: Go up to File and select Print.  A large screen will come up, click OK.  Go to the printer, and collect your piece.

• Highlighting Text: Left click mouse in front of desired word and drag. If it is surrounded in black, you have successfully highlighted a word.

2. Saving and Opening.
• Saving a Document: After you are done with a letter or other project on a writing program.  Go to File at the top of the screen and left click on Save As.  At the bottom of the screen that comes up, type in the name that you want your project to be saved as.

• Opening A Document: Go to File, and left click on Open… in the list of files that are on the screen that comes up, left-click on the file name you want to open.

3. Changing Your PC
• Changing the Screen Saver: When you’re on the normal screen right-click the mouse.  A little list will come up, at the bottom it will say Properties, left-click it.  At the top of the new screen left-click Screen Saver.  And select from the list of possible screen savers.

•Changing the Background: On the desktop, right-click the screen and select Active Desktop.  Another little list will come up, click Customize My Desktop.  At the top select Background.  Choose a background from the list.

4. Using Windows 95
• The Start Button:  There are two ways to select the start button.  One way is to left click on the Start symbol at the bottom left-hand corner. Or, you can hit the Windows symbol button on the keyboard (it looks like a little flag, and is on the bottom of the key board).

• Folders:  Every folder has icons inside of it.  When you double-left-click on a folder, a screen will come up with icons in it.  Folders are a way of sorting icons.

5. Minimizing, Maximizing, Moving, and Closing Window
• Minimizing:  To minimize a Window, left-click on the minus sign at the top right corner of the screen.  Your window will still be there, and you can access it by clicking on the title at the bottom of the screen.

• Maximizing:  To enlarge the window so it will fit the entire screen, left click on the box next to the minus sign.

• Moving:  You simply left-drag the window to the area that you want it.

• Closing:  To close a window left-click on the X in the top right corner of the window.  It will be next to the minimizing and maximizing buttons.

6. Starting WordPad
• Click the Start button, go up to Programs, then to Accessories, and the bottom of the next screen, it says WordPad, or you could go to NotePad.
