February 2001
Dear Parents:
The purpose of this letter is to inform you of a special
opportunity for all eighth graders this year. Park View has received
a Learn and Serve Grant whose purpose is to provide an intergenerational
experience between students and senior citizens. In short, during
each quarter’s eighth grade publishing class, each student acts as a “Computer
Tutor” for a Morton Grove senior. As part of the nine-week computer
class curriculum students will be responsible for:
• Publicizing the classes
• Planning the course materials
• Teaching the seniors in after school sessions
• Sharing their success stories via a web page and/or
Power Point presentation to the school board or park district board.
The rewards are many. This program will satisfy the need on the part of the seniors for classes in computer skills. Our seniors will also be able to see first hand their “tax dollars” at work. In addition, the classes will perfect the skills already possessed by many of the eighth graders and provide them with the opportunity to share their “techknowledgy.” Lastly, the intergenerational program will supply a greater understanding and appreciation of each age group for the other.
You may be wondering what your obligation is in this exciting opportunity. Could you see that your child is able to participate in the tutoring sessions? The tutoring sessions will be held after school from 3:30 to 5:00 p.m. on the following Tuesdays: March 13, 20, and 27. I have worked with the basketball and cheerleading coaches so as not to conflict with already scheduled games. I realize you may have other activities scheduled but I am hopeful that your child will be able to take part in this worthwhile activity. While I have told the students this is an optional after school time commitment, they each will still be responsible for the planning of the tutoring session whether they tutor or not. Each student who participates in the sessions will receive extra credit in publishing class AND four and a half hours of community service, well past the required hour for the quarter.
In order to assist in the planning, could you please return the permission slip below by Friday, February 23? Your assistance in this endeavor is greatly appreciated. Any questions may be directed to 965-6200, x162 or scooper@parkview.k12.il.us
Thank you very much for your continued interest in your child’s education. It is greatly appreciated.
Sincerely,
Sue Cooper
Technology Coordinator
