Comment on Norma Scagnoli’s Vision

Norma Scagnoli envisioned how technology will influence people’s lives, especially, in learning and teaching. Among the points she made, I have a couple of issues that I’d like to follow up.

  1. Kinnaman wrote and Scagnoli quoted, "Modern technology comprise the richest sets of educational tools in the history of the world, but the art of teaching is still safely and surely the province of human teachers only." I’d like to hear more about the reasons that teaching is the province of human teachers only. In the paper, Scagnoli discusses about Distance Learning and people staying home to learn. Then, it seems to me that people will learn less and less from human teachers.
  2. Heinich et al wrote and Scagnoli cited, "teachers’ role change from information presenter to learning resource coordinator. … Their new role frees them to work more independently with individuals and small groups while they let the formal presentation to another media." My concern is that how teachers can monitor the rest of class while she/he works with an individual. The rest of class will be provided with formal presentation, but it is possible they don’t focus on the topic. Also the teacher needs to discipline behaviors. It’s the same problem the traditional classrooms have. Teacher can give assignment to the rest of class while she/he works with individuals, but it doesn’t mean that the rest of the class actually works on the assignment. It is true that assignment using new technology will be more exciting, but the issue remains the same more or less.
  3. As Scagnoli acknowledged that users can skip over chapters that are not important to them or any interest to them. The self-learning media without human teachers impose students with judgement about what to focus, to skim or skip. Can we rely on individual judgement about what / how to learn?
