 Network Terminology 
TELNET The protocol or language used to login to a server from a remote location.  It allows the user to control the server.
Relevance:  There is no relevance to Lincoln Elementary District 27 at this time.
SMTP Simple Mail Transfer Protocol.  The protocol or language used to send email over the Internet.
Relevance to Lincoln Elementary District 27:  When using Eudora, go to Tools Menu -> Options -> Sending Mail to check that  smtp.abelink.com  has been added to SMTP Server.  It must be added in order to send mail.
POP/ POP3 Post Office Protocol.  The protocol or language used to receive email.  It allows a server to hold one's email before being picked up. / POP3 is the third version.
Relevance to Lincoln Elementary District 27:   When using Eudora, go to Tools Menu -> Options -> Receiving Mail and make sure POP is checked next to Server Configuration.
http:// HyperText Transfer Protocol.  An Internet protocol or language.  It transmits information between a web browser or client and the Internet server. It is a simple protocol used to move html or hypertext documents across the Internet.  This is the most common protocol on the Internet.

Relevance:  Most common Internet sites begin with protocol although when using Netscape, http:// does not need to be typed as part of the address because it is assumed to be there.
https:// A secure version of HTTP.  Information that is transmitted is secure because a secure sockets layer (SSL) protocol is also being used.
Relevance:  Make sure the area is secure before giving personal information such as credit card numbers.
SSL Secure Sockets Layer.  (Developed by Netscape)  Information that is transmitted is safely encrypted.  Encryption is commonly 48-bit, 64-bit, and 128-bit.  The more bits used, the safer the encryption.
Relevance:  Because of this layer, https:// sites are secure.
UDP User Datagram Protocol.  A protocol or language that transfers data without keeping it in a sequenced order.  Best used for networks transferring only a small amount of data or for sending broadcasts.
Relevance:  There is no relevance to Lincoln Elementary District 27 at this time.
AirPort Produced by Apple.  A computer card and an air station are needed for the computer to be able to communicate with the Internet without wires.  Read more about the Apple Wireless Technology.
Relevance:  AirPorts cannot be used with PCs.
