Group Interview

Interviewer:  Tammy Barcalow
Interviewees:  2 other 4th grade teachers, each teach 2 sections of science
(a student teacher observed us but did not participate)
Teacher experience: less than 7 years each
Date of interview:  Thursday, February 10, 2000
Time:  4:00-4:30

I was very excited about this interview.  I interviewed teachers from other buildings that teach the same science program that I do.  I was anxious to hear the differences in our programs.  They seemed to be just as interested in the interview as I.  (This caused a minor problem which I will mention later.)  The atmosphere of the interview was very comfortable as no one seemed nervous.

About switching classes and teaching the text.

About technology use throughout the day - including during science.  (There are 2 networked and Internet ready computers each of their rooms.  Their schools also include a 25-30 computer lab.) About science in the younger grades I was able to stay focused on my questions better during this interview.  I was more familiar with the questions.  A new problem arose though.  The other teachers were just as interested in my science program as I was theirs.  They expected me to answer the questions too.  Teachers seem to always be learning from one another.  Because they were helping me, (one teacher changed her volleyball practice for me), I felt that owed them answers.  I only answered the few questions that they specifically asked me.  I wanted to make the interview flow as evenly as possible and they seemed to pick up that I was not interviewing myself.  I know that it will be easier to avoid  a problem like this when the teachers are not in so similar of teaching situations.  After I concluded the interview, one teacher wanted to continue our discussion about science.  I turned off the tape recorder because her questions were not specific to what I was looking for.

I was very pleased with the information that I obtained at the interview.  The three of us don't often get a chance to discuss anything let alone our specific science/technology programs.  I picked up some tips that I may try to apply while teaching specific chapters with my classes.
