The American Quilts books
are about members of the Tandy family. Lacey Tandy learns about her
family's history or genealogy from her Gram.
You can also learn about your
family's history by trying some of the following activities.
-
At the front of each of the American
Quilt books, there is a Family Tree of the Tandy family. Get a large
piece of paper and make your own family tree. You will probably need
to ask your parents and grandparents about your ancestors. Even though
family trees aren't real trees they resemble one because they branch out
more and more, the farther back you research and record your family.
(This example
was put together by a decendent of Mayflower passengers.) When you create
your family tree, maybe you can draw a tree behind your family. Another
suggestion is to add photos of the people in the tree. (Be sure to
get permission before cutting and/or gluing your family's photographs!)
Here is an example of a family tree I created as a child. I attached
family members' pictures and a magazine picture of a tree.

Do you have a family member that
is particularly interesting because of something he or she did? Interview
the person and write about it. I recomend also recording the interview
to keep it.
-
After you have resarched your
family's history, use them as the characters in a story.
