A Children's Supplement and
Teacher's Resource for the
Historical Fiction Series by
Susan E. Kirby
"A family,
like a quilt, can be pieced together in many ways. And a quilt, like a
family, is rich with stories. Lacey's great-grandmother has a trunkful
of family quilts and stories she loves to share with Lacey. And the stories
the old quilts tell help Lacey understand not only the generations that
have come before her, but her own family as well."
The children's book series, American Quilts,
was written by Illinois author Susan Kirby. She uses quilts as the theme
of the four books in the series. One doesn't have to be a quilter to enjoy
the books. They are centered around the family history of Lacey Tandy.
Each book begins in the present day with Lacey and her great-grandmother.
The reader is quickly sent back in time as Gram Jennie tells the stories
of Lacey's family. Although fictitious, the stories are surrounded by historical
facts.
This website was put together as a supplement
and resource for the books. Follow the links to the left to find information
on Mrs. Kirby, each of the books, games and educational activities, and
more. Teachers can also find links to the Illinois Learning Standards as
well as other useful links.
American Quilts is published by Aladdin Paperbacks
of Simon & Schuster.
