After you have finished reading
Ellen's
Story, here are some activities that you can do.
-
Describe
ways in which life was different for Ellen than it would be now. Use
a Venn Diagram to help collect your ideas.
-
How did Ellen feel about Julia
at the beginning, the middle and the end of the book? Why did her
feelings change?
-
Suppose you could choose to live
in Funks Grove in 1830. Would you go? What if your family and
friends could go too? Give your reasons.
-
If you could be transported back
to Ellen's time, what would you miss the most about today?
-
Find Springfield, Funks Grove
and New Salem on an Illinois map. Can you figure out how far Ellen's
family had to travel to visit the areas mentioned in the book?
-
Louisa liked to make up rhymes.
On page 38, Louisa writes a poem about Ellen. Try to write a short
poem about someone you like.
-
Throughout the book, Jack tells
"One Time Tee" stories. They usually make everyone laugh. Try
writing your own version of "One Time" Stories.
