After you have finished reading Hattie's Story, here are some activities that you can do.

 

Describe ways in which life was different for Hattie than it would be now. Use a Venn Diagram to help collect your ideas.

 

Suppose you could choose to live in Mount Hope in 1856.  Would you go?  What if your family and friends could go too?  Give your reasons. If you could be transported back to Hattie's time, what would you miss the most about today? Research the Underground Railroad.  Draw the common routes on a map.  Do you live anywhere near the underground railroad? Make an Underground Railroad quilt from paper shapes.  Use the blocks to show directions.  Mrs. Kirby created a table runner to show students how a quilt might show a runaway slave the way to Canada.
