Penny
Additional Activities:

(these are extentions of the project and are optional)

Use the reference facts on the project site and your knowledge to answer these questions

  1. What year where you born?
  2. How many pennies were minted in that year?
  3. How many pennies in the set you counted were from that year?
  4. For the complete group of pennies you counted, write down the number made the year you were born, and also write down how many total pennies are in your complete set. Can you calculate what percentage of all the pennies in your collection were made the year you were born? If you had 100 total pennies this is easy.
  5. There are probably 150 billion (150,000,000,000) pennies in circulation now. Use the references in this site to find the number still in circulation for the year you were born. What percentage of the all the pennies still in circulation are from the year you were born? You will probably want to use a calculator.
  6. There were almost 250 million people in the United States during the year 2000. That is 250,000,000. In the year 2000 how many pennies were minted for every man, woman, and child. These are big numbers, but it is the same problem as having 20 M&Ms for 4 children. How do you figure out how many M&Ms each child can have?
  7. What is the weight of a stack of 10 pennies made in 1988?
  8. If you have 100 pennies which were all made between 1990 and 1999, what will be the weight of the full set?
  9. Is it possible for a small set of pennies made between 1970 and 2000 to have a total weight of 8.11 grams? You will need to use the Penny Compostion facts to figure this out. If it is possible, can you determine how many pennies are in this small stack?
