Process
Before going ahead with your individual team research, the task force decides to come together to study the basic population concepts and issues to achieve a common understanding.

Understanding Demographics

1.  What are the factors contributing to world population growth?

Make a visit to the Musee del Homme

Listen to what Paul Ehlrich, leading population expert, has to say.

Learn from the professors at Slippery Rock University.

2.    What are the present and projected world population growth rates ?
Look up the reports from Marie Stopes International and  The Population Institute.

Make enquires about the population trends in certain countries from the  International Data Base (IDB)

3.    What is exponential and logistical growth?

Do we have the carrying capacity?

Simulate what rapid population growth means!
My View Point

Now it's  time for you to do your  team  research on  the impact of rapid world population growth on the quality of life. Different people have debated on the issue and argued from their own stand point. You task force wants to make sure the different viewpoints are considered when preparing the final  report to UN.

Open the dossiers below to get a general feel of each of the stand point. Among yourselves,  decide on one of the roles each team would like to take on. Then, move on to study your selected  dossier in detail and begin your search !

BS01308_.jpg (4870 bytes) Friends of the Earth
You are part of a conservationist group that is interested to find out if  rapid world population growth will cause further degradation of  the environment.

BS01293_.jpg (4696 bytes) Officer from UN Food and Agricultural Organisation
You and your colleagues have been studying the trends of population growth and   want to ensure that  there is adequate food supply for everyone.

BS00821_.jpg (22448 bytes) Representative from the WorldWatch Institute
Your Institute has been keeping close watch on the use of world resources and is interested to find out if our earth's energy resources can sustain the growing population.

SO00513_.jpg (9915 bytes) Member of Zero Population Growth
Your society is committed to stopping world population growth and wants to convince others that ZPG is the way to go.

UN Presentation

Based on your research, present your team's findings and conclusions. Every team will present a written report. In addition,  teams may build models  to simulate the relationship between population growth and the quality of life in terms of the environment, food supply or energy resources.
