Infrastructure
For
this section of our assignment, I interviewed, Lisa Applegate. She
is the Network/Systems Administrator. The servers for District 108 is located
in Washington School. There is presently a 25 MB ATM connection to
each of the other 9 buildings in the district. In the fall of 2000
that will change to a 10/100 Switched Etnernet connection. There
is presently a T1 connection to Verio that includes a firewall. That
will be dropped to a Fractional T1 connection in the fall of 2000.
The connection will then be a 10 MB Ethernet connection through CivicNet.

Support
For this section of my assignment, I interviewed Angie Arnold. She is the
Tech Coordinator for Technical Support in Pekin Public School District
#108. Our district has an excellent support program in place, for which
all of us are thankful! All any teachers needs to do for support
is to email support@pekin.net. These
are the programs that our district supports, both in the schools and at
home: Windows, Office, Eudora, Netscape, School Vista. These programs are
supported for all teachers. The district also supports the webmasters
with DreamWeaver and Photoshop software. (The webmasters are the
staff members at each school responsible for that school's webpage.) The
administrators, secretaries, and learning center teachers are also supported
on the AS400, which is a listing of all students in the district.
Backup of files is the responsibility of each staff member. The staff
has been trained in the use of the Zip drive. The main server is
backedup a couple times a week on tapes.

Problem
Solving
For
this section of my assignment, I interviewed Dan Damotte. He is the
Head Support Technician. I have not kept a journal of support problems,
because the district does it for me! Click here
for a listing of support information. Click here
for the list of support staff. Click here
for the problem records. I am responsible for problem solving in my own
building. There have been limited problems to journal because school
is out of session for the summer. However, I would have to say that
the most asked question recently is what to do to the computers over the
summer. To which I answered, shut them down and unplug them from
the wall.

Ryan
Thomas
Ryan Thomas is in charge of the network at the College of Education on
the University of Illinois campus. On May 20, 2000, he took our class
on a network tour. It was very interesting and he should be encouraged
to develop a virtual web tour of it for those of us that weren't able to
be there! Our tour began at the closet. We learned that the
cables connecting with the server and the classrooms are color coded.
What we learned in kindergarten really does transfer to real life!
We progressed to the main server and learned about backup tapes, the assembly
of in the room in order to accommodate all the computers and cords and
other important facts and figures. We then progressed to the CTER
Office. It was fascinating to see where all of work actually arrives
on campus! Ryan, I will be delighted to link your virtual tour to
this page. Let me know when it is complete!
